Gay Marriage White House Lit

It’s 5 years ago today  – June 26 – that the Supreme Court upheld Marriage Equality.

Prior to that, when same-sex marriage finally became legal in California in 2013, my event colleagues and I experienced same-sex couples coming in droves from across the nation, so they could be legally married.

I was thrilled to live and work in a state that recognized these couples, and happy to welcome them and help them live their dreams.

One couple in particular has stayed with me always: two Black women from Texas, with their young daughter.

Of course I suggested a ‘toes-in-the-sand’ beach wedding – an iconic San Diego experience.

They declined and instead requested the ceremony be in a small park near the hotel where they were staying.

I kept pressing them that you couldn’t beat the gorgeous San Diego beaches.
Finally they had to say to me, that they so often have insulting slurs hurled at them as a same-sex couple, that they didn’t want to risk a wedding on the beach – so very public – and the possibility that some passerby could shout a horrid remark, not only on their very special day, but in front of their young daughter.
I felt so naive and heartbroken upon hearing that.

So, when the day came we gathered at the park. Just the two of them with their daughter as flower girl, and found a lovely stranger in the park who agreed to serve as witness.
Their love and caring toward each other made it quite apparent that the surroundings were the least important thing that day. They declared their “I Dos” and could legally call each other “wife” from that day forward.

Oddly, I’m happy that I no longer have an onslaught of same-sex couples from across the nation requesting officiating, because that means they are now able to get legally married in their own home town, surrounded by friends and family.

Do you have all the information you need to acquire your marriage license? A few things to know:
You have a 90-day window to acquire your license. You have to call to make an appointment (no walk-ins). There are several locations throughout San Diego County. It costs $70. You both have to be present.

For more information: https://arcc.sdcounty.ca.gov/Pages/marriage-licenses.aspx

Tip: Make a day of it! Though it is a government appointment with a lot of paperwork, enjoy the moment – it’s a big deal. Celebrate with a lunch or walk along the boardwalk on Pacific Highway and enjoy the ships!

2017 marks my 10th anniversary as a ceremony officiant!

kent-and-christine-weddingAnd here is evidence of my very first wedding ceremony (yes, I was a blonde back then!) at the Kona Kai on Shelter Island.

Kent and Christine were so gracious. They knew it was my first gig and they were patient and kind and we all got through it together.
The ceremony was chock full, with several selected poems, unity ceremony, rose presentation, a guest reader, and even a dove release!

I was lucky to have many years’ experience as a wedding planner under my belt at that time, so at least I was familiar with the whole process.

Dale Gottschalk (San Diego DJ) handled ceremony system and music. I’m sure he doesn’t remember it, but his calm professionalism really helped me through (bless you Dale!).

It was thanks to a 6-month training program by veteran Minister Gail Smith that I got my start, learning the ins and outs and sacred elements of officiating a ceremony. A path I had never before envisioned for myself, but one that became my true calling.
Since that first wedding, I have since added baby blessings, memorial services, and home blessings to my umbrella of services.

It has been my joy and privilege to serve couples and families through important and sacred moments in their life, and I greatly look forward to 10 more years (at least!).

This LA couple traveled down to San Diego to say ‘I Do’ in front of the iconic Hotel Del Coronado. On a beautiful breezy summer day, these two thought of everything to make their guests feel included and welcome, even supplying just the right footwear for the beach wedding ceremony.

Wedding Coordinator extraordinaire Susie Mintie had it all in hand and everything went smoothly thanks to her expert guidance.

To one of the most generous, kind and downright happiest couples I’ve had the pleasure to marry, Congratulations Mike & Kyle!

Continuing Just Imagine’s July theme of The Business of Love . . .

What if we want it to be Just Us Two?
The answer? A Confidential License

For your wedding ceremony if you would like to ‘elope’ and create a wedding ceremony that includes only the two of you, what are your options when obtaining a marriage license?

{Since ‘elope’ means “to run off secretly,” I prefer to refer to it as Just Us Two – it’s much more romantic and empowering.)

*A standard license is listed as a public record, so anybody can access the information marriage record. You need at least one witness at the ceremony (your officiant doesn’t count).

If you are having a photographer for the ceremony, you can ask them if they will serve as witness.

*A Confidential License simply means that nobody but you two can have access to the license and certificate information (eg. it’s probably a good idea if you’re a tv personality or rockstar) and with this license you don’t need a witness.
The marriage ceremony has to be performed in the same County where the confidential license was acquired, and the confidential license costs an extra $19.
At the same time, the downside is that only the two of you will have access to the records.
So think it through, and if you definitely want it to be “just us two” you can easily have that option.

Teena & Deb celebrated their 10-year anniversary this July by getting married!

It was a beautiful San Diego day and the stunning Rose Garden in Balboa Park suited these two lovely ladies perfectly.

It was such an honor for me to officiate their Just Us Two wedding ceremony (unfortunately Digits the dog couldn’t serve as witness, though was quite willing!)
Congratulations you two!!
