If you were getting married in a traditional church, the altar would define the space of your ceremony, and act as the focal point.

But what if Nature is your church?
For an outdoor wedding, the traditional ceremony frame is some version of an arch. The symbolism of the ceremony arch is the home or shelter for the couple, reminiscent of the huppah in the Jewish tradition.

With a huppah the couple and officiant actually stand underneath, as logistically it is large enough, with four poles as the structure and a linen serving as the ‘roof.’

When using an arch, sometimes there is room for the officiant to stand beneath the arch and the couple just in front; often times it serves simply as a backdrop.

Put some thought into your intention of the ceremony, beyond the words themselves. Consider creating a FRAME for your wedding ceremony, rather than a structure.

Over the years I’ve been privileged to officiate wedding ceremonies for some very creative couples.

Here are some Do’s and Don’ts as well as a few designs to inspire. Be sure to talk logistics with your florist or designer. {CLICK ON EACH PHOTO FOR LARGER IMAGE}

One of the most beautiful spots for a wedding ceremony is offered by Candelas on Coronado. Toes in the sand, lapping waves and a backdrop of America’s Finest City – downtown San Diego.

Even better was officiating the wedding ceremony for Jen and Jon on October 5. What a sweet couple!!

“Jon and I cannot thank you enough for officiating our wedding. The ceremony was so beautiful because of you. We will always remember your kind words and how comfortable you made us feel on a day when we were already excited and anxious. Thank you for helping us personalize our ceremony. It was perfect and we loved it. Thank you! Jen & Jon”

Always impressive photography by Philip DeFalco.

The couple borrowed from her family’s love of the ocean and sailing. For their unity ceremony they “tied the knot”.

Just Married! Jon and Jen really played up their oceanfront ceremony, with starfish hanging from the arch.

Continental Catering knows how to throw a party!   Last night at their Fall Fete they shared some great ideas for fall events:

Continental is always so talented by combining innovation with the tried-and-true:

Tasty fluffy miniscones get the full treatment – from chocolate to whip cream, and berries in between!

Delicious mini scones with a huge selection of toppings – berries and smooth chocolate with a top of fresh whip cream.

For a refreshing fall libation, fruit and cloves soaked for days in vodka then poured into Martinelli’s – sweet!

For their April 1 wedding celebration at Grand Pacific Palisades in Carlsbad, this couple playfully executed a fun springtime event with grace and whimsy.
From pinwheels in the arbor to argyle socks reflecting their gray & yellow theme, Katy and Troy were so fun and fun-loving!

Argyle socks reflect the fun spring-time wedding theme of yellow and gray

Cutest funnest blingiest bridal shoes ever!

Their creative execution of playful surprises throughout the wedding made this such a memorable event, and fun for their guests as well.
Friends and family got in on the act as well – Mother of the Bride created all of the centerpieces with florals from a wholesaler, and friends put set up a fun interactive Candy Bar for guests to take home goodies.

Katy & Troy: fun-loving and in love

“Gayle did everything we hoped she said she would and more. . . . it was absolutely the best choice we made in the entire wedding process. The fact that I could relax and enjoy my day with my new husband, family and friends knowing that everything was taken care of was invaluable.”

Wedding guests can make their own to-go bag favor of goodies from the candy bar!

Congratulations you two!

In the world of events, it’s the Event of the Year: It’s The Special Event Show!

I’m so excited to share a sneak peek at a celebration and behind the scenes appreciation of the incredible talent and production that goes into every event.

tse-logoThe Special Event Show is an internationally renowned event industry conference that hits a different major city each year. And this year San Diego strutted its stuff!

As Event Chair for “The Special Event Starts Here” I was excited to produce the first showcase event of this amazing week as more than 8,000 talented wedding and event industry professionals from around the globe descended on San Diego to see the best, brightest and newest to hit the world of event planning and production.

As Event Chair for the first night of celebrations: TSE Starts Here!, I couldn’t have asked for a better venue to get the party started than one of the hottest nightclubs in San Diego: Stingaree! ~Photo by Catch the Moment

“One of the best TSE Starts Here Events. The venue, the flow, the food . . . Tremendous.”  ~David Breen, Principal Designer/Founder VDA Productions

The TSE Starts Here party was a great opportunity for industry professionals to meet and mingle and sample the offerings and services of some of San Diego’s best in the business: Indulge Catering offered up the best brie you’ve ever tasted; delectable breads; sumptuous seafood; some of the finest chocolates with exotic flavoring; and the Dessert Divas to entice!

“I thought the event at Stingaree was just perfect. Plenty of wonderful food, beautifully displayed, and no wait at the bar!

Sometimes outdoor events at night can seem a bit sad, but the event’s use of fire pits, cabanas, lighting and floral made for an exciting urban experience.

Can you tell I had a great time?

THANK YOU!”
